Our plain bearings are generally insensitive to dirt and dust due to their lubrication-free dry operation. The reason is that dirt does not remain in the bearing point for very long in most applications but can run through it.
In applications with a very high dirt load e.g. in construction machines or agricultural engineering, however, this effect is not sufficient.
Dirt and dust put a huge strain on plain bearings and shafts. To prevent them from entering the bearing point in the first place, we have developed two additional safety concepts for our self-lubricating iglidur plain bearings:
Seals made of felt and radial shaft seals made of polymer. Both protect your bearing point from wear and premature failure, reduce your maintenance effort and minimise machine downtime, without any lubrication at all.

With generous lubrication, grease leaks out at the sides of the bearing and forms a kind of grease ring seal. This pushes the dirt out of the bearing point. This is effective, but only as long as it is relubricated regularly and sufficiently.
The maintenance effort is correspondingly high. If lubrication is neglected, dirt gets back into the bearing. In addition, dirt sticks to the bearing point because it is bound by the lubricating grease.
