Problem

The Belgian company Art Robotics focuses on smart technology to create intelligent, sustainable solutions for the energy and recycling industry. Its core competences lie in the fields of robotics, IoT and AI.

Art Robotics trade show faced a particular challenge with one of its customers, Umicore. Umicore is a leading company in the field of circular material technology and produces materials for high-performance optoelectronic, photovoltaic and electronic devices. The company's F&E department is constantly looking for new processes to offer cost-effective materials with the same quality, lower weight and less waste. To support these innovation processes, new measuring systems and tools for wafers are needed.

The problem is that these are not available off the shelf and have to be developed from scratch. An experienced partner is needed who can develop innovative, turnkey solutions quickly and cost-effectively. Furthermore, the system had to function in a clean room environment.

Solution

Art Robotics developed a completely new solution with the help of igus® components. All components such as the spindle axes, the motor and the motor control were integrated into a complete system that could fulfil the customer's requirements. The result: a special measuring setup for quantifying the specification of wafers.

The system, which includes parts from igus® drive technology, can handle particularly thin next-generation wafers (< 200 µm) as well as apply high forces in a controlled manner and deliver accurate measurements. The plug-and-play software with dedicated graphical user interface in combination with the D1 motor controller enables easy configuration and feed-through of measurements.

As the measurements are performed in a clean room environment, all components are clean room compatible. It is a table-top system that is compact, ergonomic and safe to operate. The system - just like the products of igus® drive technology - is designed for modularity in order to expand its capabilities in the future.
